Leggy seedlings have a single cause: not enough light. The long, pale, wobbly stem is the plant stretching toward a light source that isn't there, and the fix is to give the seedlings more light and, often, less heat. The current batch can usually be saved. The next batch can be stopped before it starts.
What leggy means, and why it happens
A healthy seedling is short and stocky: a thick stem, closely spaced leaves, deep colour. A leggy seedling is the opposite: a long, thin, pale stem, leaves spaced far apart, and a tendency to flop over at the first breeze.
The mechanism is straightforward. Plants grow toward light, and the stem's job is to carry the leaves up to it. When light is dim or comes from one direction, the plant pours its energy into stem growth, stretching upward in the hope of finding better light, while leaves and roots get left behind. The course describes the plant's basic economy plainly: once germinated, a plant needs water, nutrients, and light to photosynthesise, and everything a grower does is adjusting those three inputs. Legginess is what happens when the light input is the bottleneck.
The two usual causes
In a typical house, legginess comes from a combination of two things:
Not enough light. A windowsill in early spring gives a seedling a fraction of the light it would get outdoors. South-facing is best, but even a south window in March provides only a few useful hours a day, and light through a double-glazed, slightly grubby window is weaker still. The seedling responds by stretching.
Too much warmth. Most houses are kept at a steady 18–21°C, which is perfect for germinating seeds and then too warm for growing them on. Warmth speeds up the seedling's growth, but the light can't keep pace, so the plant grows fast and thin instead of slow and stocky. A propagator or heated mat left on after germination makes this markedly worse.
Sowing too early is the enabler: seeds started in January, when the light isn't there yet, stretch no matter how good your windowsill is.
Fixing the current batch
Leggy seedlings are not a lost cause. The stretched stem is weak, but the seedling is healthy, and most can be rescued.
Give them light now. Move the tray to the brightest spot in the house, clean the window, and rotate the tray a quarter turn each day so they don't all lean one way. If you can, put them outside on mild days, in a sheltered, shaded spot at first: the outdoors light, even indirect, dwarfs what a windowsill offers, and a gentle breeze strengthens the stems as a bonus.
Prick them out and plant deep. If the seedlings are crowded, separate them into individual pots. When you pot on, plant them deeper than they were: tomatoes and several other crops root along the buried stem, so a leggy tomato seedling buried up to its seed leaves comes back as a stocky plant with a full root system. For crops that don't root along the stem, planting slightly deep and firming the soil still helps support the weak stem.
Consider a grow light for the next batch. A cheap LED grow light, £15–25, removes the whole problem class. Set it close, a few inches above the seedlings, on a timer for 12–16 hours a day, and raise it as they grow. Seedlings under a proper light come out short, dark, and thick-stemmed, which is exactly the shape you want.
Stopping it next time
The prevention is the same as the cure, applied earlier:
- Start seeds only when the light can support them. Sowing a month later into a bright windowsill beats sowing early into a dim one. The course's sowing calendar runs from the first chilli and pepper sowings in January through to the last winter salads in September, and the ones that need an early start also need the strongest light you can give them.
- Germinate warm, grow cool. Seeds germinate fast in warmth, but once they're up, move them somewhere cooler and brighter: a cool windowsill is better than a warm one for growing on.
- Sow at the right density. Overcrowded seedlings compete for light and stretch to escape each other. Sowing in module trays, one seed per cell, gives each plant its own space and makes pricking out unnecessary.
- Turn the tray daily. Seedlings lean toward the window; rotating the tray keeps them straight and evenly lit.
The good news is that legginess is a beginner's rite of passage, not a mark of failure. Every gardener has raised a tray of pale, flopping seedlings, and every gardener has fixed the next batch with a brighter sill and a later sowing date. Common questions
Can leggy seedlings be saved?
Mostly, yes. Prick them out into individual pots, give them far more light, and plant them deep when you pot on: tomatoes and other plants that root along the stem can be buried right up to the seed leaves, which turns the stretched stem into buried root. Only the hopelessly thin and floppy ones are worth discarding.
Why are my seedlings tall but not filling out?
That's the elongation reflex itself. A seedling getting less light than it needs puts its energy into stem growth, stretching upward to find better light, at the expense of leaves and root. It's not a watering problem and it's not overfeeding: it's the plant's search for light.
Do I need grow lights to start seeds?
Not always. A bright south-facing windowsill can carry early sowings, especially if the window is clean and the tray is rotated daily. But for winter sowings, or anything started more than a month before spring light arrives, a cheap LED grow light removes the guesswork entirely.
How much light do seedlings need each day?
Around 12–16 hours is the working range for seedlings under lights, and they need it bright. Daylight on a windowsill in early spring provides only a few useful hours, which is why windowsill seedlings stretch. A timer on a grow light takes the remembering out of it.
Why do my seedlings fall over and die at soil level?
That's a different failure: damping off, a fungal disease that attacks seedlings in cold, wet, overcrowded conditions. Leggy seedlings are tall and pale but usually recoverable. A seedling that collapses at the base with a pinched, darkened stem is damping off, and the cure is cleaner, warmer, less crowded conditions, not more light.
