A stalled compost heap is almost always one of four things: too much carbon and not enough nitrogen, too dry or too wet, not enough air, or not enough volume to hold any heat. Work through those in order and you'll usually find the fault within a few minutes of digging into the pile. September makes this worse than most months, because the material going into most heaps just changed character.
The four usual suspects
Too much brown, not enough green. Compost needs both carbon-rich material (cardboard, dried leaves, straw) and nitrogen-rich material (grass clippings, vegetable peelings, coffee grounds) in roughly equal volumes. Bacteria use the nitrogen for growth and the carbon for energy; too much of either and the balance that drives fast decomposition falls apart. A heap that's gone quiet and dry, with recognisable dead leaves and cardboard still sitting there months later, is short on greens.
Too dry, or too wet. The heap should feel like a wrung-out sponge: squeeze a handful and a few drops should come out, no more. Too dry and the bacteria that do the work simply stop. Too wet and it goes anaerobic, which smells (usually of rotten eggs) and works far more slowly than the aerobic process you actually want.
Not enough air. Aerobic bacteria, the fast and odourless kind, need oxygen. A heap that's compacted, waterlogged, or full of matted material such as thick clumps of grass or wet leaves pressed flat, chokes off the air pockets those bacteria need. This is the most common reason a heap that started well slows down over a few weeks.
Not enough volume. A small heap, less than roughly a cubic metre, struggles to generate or hold any heat, which means the whole process runs at the slow, cold-composting pace even if you're doing everything else right. If your bin is a small plastic dalek and it's less than half full, that's your answer before you look any further.
Dig a fork into the heap and you'll usually see which of the four applies. A dry, fibrous mass that hasn't shrunk is a browns problem. A grey, slimy mat that smells is a wetness or air problem. A heap that looks fine but is barely warm even in the centre is usually a volume problem.
Why September is when heaps stall
Through summer, most gardens produce a steady supply of nitrogen-rich green material: grass clippings from regular mowing, spent bedding plants, kitchen peelings from a busier kitchen. That's exactly the mix a compost heap wants, and it's why summer heaps often run hot with almost no effort.
By September, that supply changes shape. Mowing slows down as growth slows. The tomatoes and courgettes are winding up rather than producing daily trimmings. And the first leaves start coming down, which tips a huge amount of carbon-rich material into gardens all at once. A heap that was ticking along nicely in July can go quiet in September simply because the greens have dried up and the browns have taken over, with nobody having changed anything on purpose.
The fix is the same as any browns-heavy heap: add nitrogen deliberately. A fork of grass clippings if you're still mowing, vegetable trimmings from the kitchen, or a compost activator (£6 to £12, most garden centres) all work. Comfrey leaves or nettles, if you've got either growing nearby, are free and effective.
The leaf mould trap
The single biggest September mistake is tipping a full leaf fall straight into the compost bin. Leaves break down through a different process to most compost material: fungi rather than bacteria, working slowly in cool, damp conditions rather than the warm, fast bacterial action a compost heap relies on. A bin filled mostly with leaves goes dry, cold and largely static, because you've effectively built a slow fungal process inside a system set up for a fast bacterial one.
The better plan is to keep the two separate. A thin scattering of leaves mixed through the compost heap is fine and even useful as a carbon source. The bulk of a big leaf fall is better made into leaf mould on its own: a simple wire cage, or leaves bagged in old compost sacks with a few holes punched in for air, left somewhere shaded for six to twelve months. Shredding the leaves first, running the mower over them on the lawn before raking, speeds this up considerably and is worth the ten minutes it takes. The result is a crumbly, dark, low-nutrient soil conditioner that's excellent for potting mixes and mulch, and it costs nothing beyond the wait.
Getting a stalled heap moving again
If you've identified the fault, the fixes are quick:
Slimy and smelling of ammonia means too much green material. Fork through some cardboard, straw or dried leaves and turn the heap to get air back into it.
Dry and static means too much brown, or the heap has simply dried out. Water it as you turn it, and add a layer of greens: grass, kitchen scraps, or a shop-bought activator.
Smelling of rotten eggs is anaerobic conditions, almost always from compaction or waterlogging. Turning is the fix; do it properly, moving the outer material into the centre, not just stirring the top.
Barely warm and not shrinking usually means too little volume or too little nitrogen. Combine your heap with another source of material if you have one, such as a neighbour's grass clippings, or accept that a small heap will run at the slower, cold-composting pace and simply needs more patience.
A turn, done properly, resolves most of these on its own by mixing everything back together and letting air in. A garden fork works for small heaps; a proper compost aerator (£10 to £20) or turning tool makes it considerably less effort for anything larger, and a compost thermometer (£12 to £25) takes the guesswork out of knowing whether a heap that looks fine is actually working.
What this sets up for spring
None of this is urgent in the way a leaking pipe is urgent. A heap that's stalled in September will still, eventually, turn into compost; it just takes longer. But getting it moving again now means finished compost ready to dig into beds or spread as a mulch in spring, rather than a heap that's still only half-broken-down when you need it. How long should it take for compost to be ready?

A heap that has sat for over a year with no visible change almost always has a specific fault, not just slowness.
Can I add too many autumn leaves to my compost bin?
Yes, and it's the most common September problem. Leaves are carbon-heavy and slow to break down on their own, so a bin that's mostly leaves goes dry and inert. A thin layer mixed through the heap is fine; the bulk of a big leaf fall is better made into leaf mould separately.
Do I need to turn my compost heap?
